BITEC Expansion, Thailand

BITEC Expansion, Thailand

BITEC, the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre, is a large exhibition venue located east of Bangkok in the Bang Na district.

Dextra was involved in the Phase 2 expansion of the exhibition center, which took place between 2014 and 2016. The expansion project added three exhibition halls, increasing the exhibition space by more than 32,000 sqm under a ceiling height of 25 meters.

Dextra worked together with contractor Italian-Thai to engineer and supply long tension rod systems that support the roof structure above the new BITEC exhibition halls.

In total, Dextra delivered 298 assemblies in various diameters, each composed of multiple rods connected with couplers and turnbuckles and anchored to the structure with fork ends. In several cases, the total assembly length exceeded 50 meters (with an average of 33 meters).

Delivery took place at the end of 2015, and installation was completed by mid-2016. Bangkokians can still easily admire the tension rod roofing structure when stopping at BTS Bearing station or driving along the Bang Na-Trat highway.

For such large structures, tension rods offer a number of advantages compared to other “tensioning” solutions: lower elongation under loads, lower post tensioning forces required, better resistance to corrosion, reduced long terms relaxation and reduced maintenance and surveillance costs.

Moreover, they are easily to install thanks to their fork ends and offer a very aesthetic roofing structure.

The Great Mosque of Algiers, Algeria

The Great Mosque of Algiers, Algeria

The new Djamaa El Djazair Mosque in Algiers is a major construction project located in the eastern part of Algeria’s capital. It will feature the world’s tallest minaret, standing at 265 meters. Additionally, the vast complex will accommodate up to 120,000 worshippers.

For the main mosque building, Dextra supplied its Tension Rod Systems to China State Construction Engineering Corporation, the project’s main contractor. In total, more than 800 structural tension rod assemblies, with diameters ranging from M16 to M56, are being used for the cross-bracing of the domed prayer room’s roofing structure.

Each tension rod is painted white to match the mosque’s interior design. Bracing discs (top left picture) contribute to the architectural aesthetics of the structure.

For the construction of the building and minaret, Dextra also supplied its popular Bartec coupler solution, which is available in Algeria through our network of distributors. For more information, consult our Paris office.

Abu Dhabi International Airport

Abu Dhabi International Airport

Abu Dhabi Airport is the main airport of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, located approximately 15 km east of the city. It is the second busiest airport in the UAE, after Dubai International.

Dextra has been involved in the construction of the new Midfield Terminal (Terminal 3), which is set to enter service at the end of 2017. This expansion significantly boosts the airport’s capacity and provides new gates for large airliners, such as the A380.

Dextra played a key role in several aspects of the new terminal, including the foundation, concrete structures, roof, and façade.

Foundations & Concrete structures

For the foundation piles, Bartec couplers were used to reconnect prefabricated cages forming the foundation piles, as well as for other concrete applications. This solution was complemented by the use of Sonitec sonic logging tubes. The tubes, used for Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) integrity testing, are delivered in segments that can be easily reconnected by hand thanks to their bell mouth, saving time during installation. A total of 650,000 Bartec couplers and more than 110,000 meters of Sonitec tubes were installed at the Abu Dhabi Midfield Terminal.

Roofing and Façade

For the roofing structure, the Dextra engineering team provided two customized structural solutions.

For all applications requiring structural members to work in compression, Dextra supplied its Compression Strut solution. Compression Struts are easy to install thanks to their fork ends and conveniently allow for minor length adjustments at each fork. A total of 529 Compression Struts were installed for this project.

For trusses where the force is in tension, Dextra supplied its Tension Rod Systems. Similar to the Compression Struts, Tension Bars are easily installed thanks to fork ends, provide adjustment capability at the forks, and feature in-line turnbuckles. Dextra’s Stainless range was selected for this application, ensuring unmatched aesthetics with its mirror surface finish.
