Delhi Metro is the largest and busiest rapid transit system in India, serving Delhi and its satellite cities. Phase 3 will add 35 underground stations and 3 new lines.

The total length of the 54 km underground corridors in Phase 3 are more than the total underground sections in phase 1 & 2, making it a challenge for construction in this densely populated city.

Glass Fiber Reinforcing Bars (GFRP) have been used for the numerous “soft-eyes” in diaphragm walls of several stations, which has facilitated the excavation of underground tunnels by TBMs.

Astec™ Active Anchors (AAA) have also been used as temporary stressed anchors in retaining walls in replacement of traditional strutting, this enhancing greatly the accessibility during excavation work.

Moreover, Bartec™ rebar couplers and Dextra post-tensioning bar systems were installed in various parts of the construction.

The UK CARES TA1-A certification is the latest addition for our Unitec repair coupler, which is recognized as a versatile and highly dependable solution for the splicing of in-situ rebars without bar-end preparation.

A grand return to nuclear energy in UK

The Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station is one of the biggest and most technologically complex projects in Europe.

HPC is the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK in a generation, and its construction requires a highly skilled workforce and the very best construction and engineering solutions.

The HPC Project is located in Somerset, South West England, and will consist of two nuclear reactors capable of generating 3.2GW of low-carbon electricity.

The new power station is being constructed in the same area as the existing Hinkley Point A and B stations. The former has ceased operation for quite some time, while the latter is scheduled to begin decommissioning in 2023.

Dextra was entrusted with the supply of mechanical splices for concrete reinforcement for parts of HPC, particularly the reactor’s aircraft impact protective shell.

More than one million Griptec couplers are forecasted to be required for the construction of HPC.

Griptec is designed to comply with the most stringent project specifications, and has proven to be a popular system of choice for EPR nuclear power stations, having been used for the construction of the Flamanville 3, Taishan 1 and Taishan 2 power stations.

Headed Bars: a new design guide

While headed reinforcement anchors are widely used in some parts of the world, their adoption in Europe has to date been limited, mainly because of the lack of design provisions contained within Eurocode 2 as well as a lack of European product standards and certification schemes.

With this in mind, Dextra has recently collaborated with Ove Arup & Partners to produce a headed reinforcement anchor design guide.

The document entitled “Methodology for Designing with Headed Reinforcement Anchors to Eurocode 2” is exclusively available from Dextra and gives a step by step guide for designing to Eurocode 2.

Extract from the document: headed reinforcement anchors replacing traditional anchorage reinforcement at a beam-column junction

Dextra has two CARES certified headed bar products:

  • Griptec headed reinforcement is available for rebar diameters 12mm to 50mm and ideal for main reinforcement anchorage.
  • HF headed reinforcement is ideal for shear links and other reinforcement which needs to be first processed via an automatic cut and bend line. They are available for rebar diameters 10mm to 20mm.
