Uniqlo & Hive Warehouse, Indonesia

Indonesia’s building construction sector has driven the demand for rapid and efficient construction methods to accommodate its growing population. Precast construction has emerged as a key solution to these challenges, helping to reduce on-site labor, accelerate project timelines, and ensure consistent quality.

A seamless connection between structural elements is essential for the success of precast construction. Dextra supplied Groutec precast couplers for projects worldwide, including in Indonesia. Groutec couplers (20mm) were used in the Uniqlo & Hive Indonesia warehouse building project for joining precast columns, enabling rapid and reliable assembly while ensuring structural integrity.

The use of these couplers has minimized on-site labor requirements and expedited project milestones, leading to cost savings and timely project completion. This allows the building to become operational sooner. Additionally, the high-strength steel composition of the couplers, along with stringent quality control measures, ensures robust connections capable of withstanding dynamic structural loads.

Plum Condo Bangyai Station, Thailand

Plum Condo Bangyai Station, Thailand

Plum Condo Bangyai Station is a 38-story condominium project consisting of two towers, located near Bangyai elevated metro station in the northwest of Bangkok. The residential building will house 1,013 apartments.

Phase 1 of the project (the first tower) began in September 2015 and is expected to be completed around March 2018. The fast-paced construction is made possible by the use of fully precast concrete techniques.

The project owner, Pruksa, is operating its own precast plant specifically for this development.

For this project, Pruksa aimed to quickly erect precast panels (serving as shear walls) for all levels above ground. To meet this requirement, Dextra recommended the use of Groutec couplers.

Groutec couplers were mounted on Ø25mm rebars, which had been pre-threaded using the Bartec system. The couplers, installed at the bottom of each precast element, were then cast as part of the precast wall panel.

After lifting the element to the upper floor on-site, reconnection to the protruding reinforcement was achieved by injecting non-shrink mortar. It is important to note that Dextra does not supply the mortar; instead, it can be sourced locally, generating significant cost savings. Once the grout is injected, bracing around each panel can be removed after three days.

Jamnagar refinery expansion

Jamnagar Refinery Expansion: The World’s Largest Refinery by Production Capacity

Located in Gujarat, western India, the Jamnagar Refinery is the largest refinery in the world by production capacity. Owned by Reliance Industries, it was commissioned in 1998 and spans a vast 50 km² area.

For Phase 3 alone, more than 305,000 tons of steel reinforcement were used in a 36-month project, involving over 100,000 engineers and construction workers.
Dextra has been involved in Jamnagar since the early phases, supplying rebar splicing solutions for Phases 1, 2, and 3 of the project.

Dextra’s Rebar Splicing Solutions for Phase 3:

Three rebar coupler solutions were used in Phase 3:

  • Bartec Solution
Used for cast-in-situ applications, including bar-to-bar connections in foundations, pile cages, and column cages.
Also utilized in heavily congested rafts and pile caps to facilitate efficient rebar splicing.
  • Groutec Couplers
Applied to pipe racks, which were constructed from precast elements in a dedicated precast factory within the project.
Positioned in the bottom elements and filled with grout, eliminating the need for in-situ wet joints and ensuring fast, secure connections between beams and columns.
  • Unitec Couplers
Used in applications where rebar length was too short to allow traditional overlap connections.

Forest City Johor 森林城市

Forest City Johor 森林城市

Forest City is a massive mixed-use urban development taking place in the Southern tip of Malaysia, in the Iskandar region, Johor. The development is taking place on reclaimed land just across the Johor Straight, in sight of Singapore.

The project, which will continue over the next decade, aims ultimately to create 300,000 residential units, hosting as many as 700,000 people, as well as numerous commercial buildings.

The Forest City project is expected to fuel the region’s economy, as well as Singapore, as light rail and road links will ultimately make the connection across the island state.

Dextra has been involved since the early phases of the project for the supply of its Groutec S precast solution. Groutec allow the swift connection of precast columns and panels, without the need of in situ joints, speeding up the construction project. For the Forest City Project, Groutec S couplers (compact models) were used to connect the panels making the residential towers shear walls.

The Forest City project is supported by the installation at site of several sets of Bartec threading equipment, which prepare the bars with threads in order to perform the connection with the top part of the Groutec S sleeve. The Dextra aftersales team also provided training and support in order to guarantee high production output during the project duration.

Emirates’ Bustanica Vertical Farm, UAE

Emirates’ Bustanica Vertical Farm, UAE

Emirates’ Bustanica Vertical Farm is the world’s largest vertical farm, a sprawling indoor farming facility spanning an impressive 330,000 square feet. This state-of-the-art facility plays a crucial role in providing fresh, locally sourced in-flight food for Emirates and several other airlines operating at Dubai International Airport. At the core of this groundbreaking project lies meticulous engineering, and one crucial component that contributes to its success is the use of Dextra Groutec couplers for the precast shear wall module connections.

This vertical farm employs cutting-edge technology to cultivate a diverse range of crops in a controlled environment. By stacking layers of crops vertically, the facility maximizes space utilization while minimizing resource consumption. The result is a sustainable and efficient system that produces fresh, high-quality produce year-round, regardless of external climatic conditions.

The Role of Dextra Groutec Couplers

In any construction project, the choice of materials and components is critical to ensuring structural integrity and long-term durability. In the case of the world’s largest vertical farm, the engineers faced the challenge of connecting precast shear wall modules securely. The solution came in the form of Groutec L couplers with a diameter of 25mm.

Groutec couplers are renowned for their reliability and strength in connecting precast concrete elements. These couplers provide a robust and efficient means of joining precast concrete components, ensuring the structural stability of the entire facility. The 25mm diameter was carefully selected to meet the specific requirements of the shear wall modules, offering a seamless connection that enhances the overall resilience of the vertical farm.

The Groutec couplers not only facilitate the structural integrity of the vertical farm but also align with the project’s commitment to sustainability. The durability and reliability of these couplers ensure that the connections withstand the test of time, supporting the longevity of the facility and its contribution to sustainable agriculture.
