Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), colossal bridge in the Philippines

Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), colossal bridge in the Philippines

Cebu – Cordova Link Expressway is one of the biggest infrastructure projects being undertaken in the Philippines. The project features a combination of a causeway, a gigantic cable-stayed bridge that will cross the navigable zone of the Cebu Strait, two viaducts and four low height bridges, as well as roadways and pedestrian walkways.
The CCLEX Project aims to provide better transport facilities while reducing traffic congestion in the region, as well as to improve connectivity within Cebu City. It will also intended to support Cordova’s economic growth, as the expressway will position the City as the gateway for island tourism.
Also known as Third Mandaue – Mactan Bridge, the official ground-breaking of the toll bridge was in 2017, with the completion being scheduled for 2022.

Cable-stayed bridge to connect Cebu and Mactan Island

After its completion, the Cebu-Cordova Expressway will link Cebu mainland and Mactan Island through Cordova town. The 8.5 km-long toll bridge will feature two lanes that will serve up to 40,000 vehicles a day. The main bridge will be built with a 400 meter cable-stayed main span, with 60-meter navigation clearance, allowing ships to easily navigate through the expressway.
The main bridge of the expressway will connect Guadalupe River to the Shell Island in Cordova, while its colossal viaducts will link it to the causeway and road networks to Mactan.

Dextra Bartec, reinforcing solutions for the construction of Cebu-Cordova Bridge

The design and the construction of this megaproject is undertaken by the Cebu Link Joint Venture (CLJV). The CLJV is a joint-venture partnership between the Spain-based Acciona Construccion S.A. and the Philippines-based First Balfour Inc. and D.M. Consunji Inc.
For the reinforcement of the colossal expressway’s foundations, the contractor has chosen Dextra’s well-known rebar splicing solution Bartec. More than 35,000 units of Standard, Bridging, as well as Transition splices of steel grade 75, both in diameter 40 and 50, have been applied to the foundations’ piling cages as of July 2018. Moreover, to provide better end anchorages in congested areas, the CLJV opted for Dextra Bartec headed bars, which are also known as end anchors. Bartec end anchors are a convenient alternative to hooked bars, traditionally used for anchoring.

West Gate Tunnel

West Gate Tunnel

The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, providing a much needed second river crossing, quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks from residential streets.

The project will link the West Gate Freeway at Yarraville to the Port of Melbourne and CityLink at the Docklands via twin tunnels beneath Yarraville and an elevated Footscray Road.

The elevated road includes 300 piles of variable height. The piles have been precast in multiple segments, close to the site. Vertical post-tensioning bars assembly together all the segments of each pile.

This construction method of piles is more and more common but requires an impeccable preparation, both in terms of method statement and products definition. Each detail is fundamental for the success of the installation.

Dextra supplied Freyssinet with more than 1,000 tons of Freyssibar+ systems, grade 930/1080 MPa, with nominal diameters of 72mm and 55mm, and 7,500 anchorages for vertical permanent application.

With a close cooperation between DEXTRA, Freyssinet back-office (Technical Department and Freyssinet products company) and the job site staff (Freyssinet Major Project and Freyssinet Australia), the post-tensioning system has been perfectly adapted to the needs of the project.

The bar diameters, steel grade and the design of the anchorages have been validated through qualification tests according to Australian Standards, demonstrating the performance of the system.

This bar system can be used for post tensioning, prestressed ground anchors and any application involving temporary or permanent tie-rods, lifting, suspension, prestressed splices, etc.

Major project construction started in January 2018.

Bar-Boljare highway – Four viaducts

Bar-Boljare highway – Four viaducts

The Bar-Boljare Highway Project is a key infrastructure project led by the Ministry of Transportation and Maritime Affairs of Montenegro. It aims at improving the connections within the country and also between Montenegro and the rest of Europe in order to boost the country’s economy and tourism.

The project, built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), embodies a new successful example of the cooperation between China and Eastern Europe. The new 2×2-ways highway spans over 40 km. It is built in challenging terrains and yet satisfies both EU & Montenegro standards of road infrastructure. Its schedule is ambitious too: both roads and viaducts should be built in under 4 years.

For the Bar-Boljare Highway Project, Dextra supplied its Bartec rebar coupler solution, used the splicing of rebar in the piles of the four viaducts. Dextra Bartec splicing solution was chosen on that project for its compliance with ISO 15835 S2, which defines rebar coupler and reinforcement to be resistant to violent earthquakes conditions. A total of 230,000 Bartec rebar couplers have been supplied to CRBC.

Doha Link (Jaber Causeway)

Doha Link (Jaber Causeway)

Doha Link is a marine bridge project currently being built West of Kuwait City. It will ultimately be connected to Main Causeway Across Kuwait Bay, another sea link project North of Kuwait City, which connected make together the Jaber Causeway sea link, one of the largest civil engineering project ever built in the Middle East.

The Doha Link stretches West of Kuwait City, It will ultimately solve traffic congestion and offer a direct itinerary thanks to a 7.7km bridge structure built on shallow waters across the Kuwait Bay.

Rebar splicing solution

Dextra has been involved in the early stage of the construction project to provide a technical solution for the splicing of the very large rebar cages making the onshore and offshore foundation piles.

Rolltec® couplers for large diameter rebar (32, 36 and 40mm) were used for the connection of cages and piers. Two grades of rebar are used across the project: ASTM Grade 60 and Grade 80. Rolltec being compatible by design with the higher ASTM Grade 80, same couplers may be used on all applications, simplifying stock keeping.

In addition, smaller diameters couplers for rebar 12mm and 16mm were used for the superstructure and the footing of light poles

One of the main advantages of Rolltec for remote projects its very light machine set up. Rolltec is supported by a single one-man machine, offering a high level of productivity. Because the equipment is relatively small and the rebar preparation efforts were taking place simultaneously on both sides of the sea link construction, Dextra dispatched up to 4 machines on each side of the project to support the piling efforts.

Sonitec tube solution

With large piles of 2.5m diameter and 60m depth in average, it was compulsory for GS E&C to conduct sonic logging tests to examine the integrity of concrete piles, requiring to install 8 tubes in each cage.

To achieve very long tube length and optimize cage preparation output, Dextra Sonitec was the preferred choice of the contractor. Thanks to its light weight and unique Push-Fit® connection feature. Sonitec provides enough flexibility during the cage construction, lifting and assembly of the cage, and remove needs for additional time-consuming welding operations.

Mahatma Gandhi Setu Rehabilitation

Mahatma Gandhi Setu Rehabilitation

The Mahatma Gandhi Setu (also known as Gandhi Setu or Ganga Setu) is a bridge that spans the Ganges River in Bihar, India, and connects Patna and Hajipur. It is India’s third-longest river bridge, with a length of 5,750 meters.

The bridge had experienced considerable traffic congestion in recent decades as a result of an increase in the number of cars crossing it, which had caused it to operate at capacity and overburden the structure. It required replacement of the concrete superstructure with steel framework.

Dextra participated in this renovation project by supplying RepairGrip couplers for the connection of old pier and new pier caps.

Fully threaded bars were also provided for various applications during the demolition of the old superstructure.

The renovated western flank was opened to public on July 31, 2020.

Causeway across Kuwait Bay

The Main Causeway across the Kuwait Bay is a 36-km long project currently being built North of Kuwait City. It will ultimately be connected to Doha Link, another sea link project West of Kuwait City, which connected make together the Jaber Causeway sea link, one of the largest civil engineering project ever built in the Middle East.

The Main Causeway Across Kuwait Bay stretches North of Kuwait City. It is expected that the link will greatly contribute to the development of Northern part of Kuwait. To achieve that, the Causeway will literally cut across Kuwait Bay with a 27-km sea link.

Bridge pylons and girders

For the visible part of the sea link, Dextra worked with contractor Hyundai to offer high tensile post tensioning bar solutions.

Dextra Smooth PT Bar Grade 835/1050s were used all along the sea link for the connection of the precast girders together.

For part of the sea link which is topped by metallic cable-stayed structure. Higher performance bars in Grade 1050/1200 were used to offer a vertical anchoring point between the pylon and the reinforcement of the pile. PT Bars were delivered with a full corrosion protection accessory set by Dextra so that the bars will resists the marine conditions.

Crosshole Sonic Logging tubes

For the concrete integrity testing of the onshore and offshore foundation piles, Dextra supplied around 400,000 linear meters of Sonitec tubes, which are easy to set up and reconnect, without need of welding, which significantly increases the productivity of the pile assemblies.

Once installed, the tubes are firmly in place, supporting without issue the cage lifting and handling.

It facilitates the evaluation of the quality and reliability of the foundation piles, ensuring the bridge’s long-term stability and safety.

Tân Vũ – Lạch Huyện Bridge

Tân Vũ – Lạch Huyện Bridge

The Tan Vu – Lach Huyen Bridge is a 5.4-km long bridge located East of Hai Phong, in the North of Vietnam. The brige is connecting the Hai Han district (East of Hai Phong), to the new port of Lach Huyen, located on the island district of Cat Hai. This will also allow the port of Lach Huyen to be directly connected to the Hai Phong/Hanoi highway, drastically reducing the transit time to Vietnam’s capital city.

The bridge project is part of a broader infrastucture plan: the Tan Vu – Lach Huyen highway infrastructure project, which aims to develop Hai Phon as a main transportation hub in the North of Vietnam.

For this bridge project, Dextra supplied two types of Post Tensioning systems:

  • For the permanent reinforcement of precast girder segments, Dextra supplied PT smooth bar systems with threaded ends in sizes M39 and M49, grade 835/1030 and 930/1080. Dextra bar systems are used for the vertical post-tensioning of concrete segments.
  • For the lifting and temporary fixing of the precast girders segments during the construction phase, Dextra supplied its Fully threaded bar systems in diameters 32 and 36, grade 1080/1230.

For all temporary applications such as lifting and fixing operations, Fully threaded PT bar systems are a convenient and economical solution as they bars can easily be cut, adjusted and re-used several times. Thanks to their continuous thread, the bars can be spliced at any points by the use of couplers or turnbuckles, which are also available from Dextra.
