A66 Salzbachtal Bridge, Germany

A66 Salzbachtal Bridge, Germany

The A66 Salzbachtal Bridge, located in Wiesbaden, Hesse, is a 304-meter-long, four-lane motorway bridge on the A66. Originally constructed in the mid-20th century, the bridge has been subject to wear and tear due to increasing traffic loads and aging infrastructure.

Foundation piles are fundamental to the stability and longevity of bridge structures. Ensuring their integrity is crucial to preventing potential structural failures. Dextra played a pivotal role by supplying approximately 10,000 linear meters of Sonitec CSL (Cross Sonic Logging) tubes.

Sonic tubes are essential components in the CSL testing method, which is widely regarded as one of the most reliable techniques for assessing deep foundation integrity. Sonitec, designed for easy installation within the reinforcement cage, facilitates accurate cross-hole sonic logging, allowing engineers to precisely detect and locate defects within the piles.

New Bay Bridge of San Francisco

New Bay Bridge of San Francisco

The New Bay Bridge is a large civil engineering project taking place between the years 2002 and 2013. The aim of the project was to replace two segments of the Bay Bridge vulnerable to eathquakes by a new structure designed to withstand seismic efforts.

For that project, Dextra was involved on two segments of the renovation project: the approach to Bay Bridge on the San Francisco side, and the Eastern segment from the Island of Yerba Buena to Oakland.

Dextra supplied for this project its Bartec Headed Bar systems. Headed Bars are an anchor disc mounted on the end of a rebar previously prepared for the Bartec system.

The use of Headed Bars provides an smart and compact alternative to long rebar hooks in areas where the reinforcement is particularly congested. Unlike hook bars, Headed Bars are particularly easy to install, as end anchors can just be screwed onto the reinforcement at a later stage, after the reinforcement is installed.

For the approach to the Bay Bridgee in San Francisco and the Yerba Buena Eastern Segment, Bartec Headed Bars were used for the shear reinforcing of the column foundations, as well as in the bridge hinges.

The Bartec Headed Bars solution is approved by CALTRANS, the California Department of Transportation, for all imperial bar size #3 to #18. and is also certified by the ICC-ES.

Hanoi Nhật Tân Bridge

Hanoi Nhật Tân Bridge (Vietnam – Japan Friendship Bridge)

The Nhat Than Bridge is an impressive cable-stayed bridge spanning over the Red River and located North of Hanoi. The total length of the project is 8.9 km, including the actual3.75 km bridge.

The bridge is the new gateway to Hanoi as it greatly reduces the transport time to Hanoi Noi Ban Airport, the second busiest airport of Vietnam in passengers.

The bridge was inaugurated by the Ministry of Transport of Vietnam and opened to the public on the 4th of January 2015. The bridge has since theen been renamed “Vietnam – Japan Friendship Bridge).

Dextra has been involved on the Nhat Tan bridge since the early stage of the project by supplying the popular Bartec rebar couplers, the main rebar splicing solution in Vietnam. Bartec connections were used in various part of the project: approaches, foundation piles, pile caps and approaches.

Bartec couplers make a convenient rebar splicing solution as the same standard coupler can be used for standard connection (rotating rebar into coupler) and position connection (rotating only coupler, when it is impossible to rotate rebar). Dextra supplied more than 130,000 connections in total for this project for the lifting of heavy elements.

For the temporary operations of lifting and fixing of the girder precast segments, Dextra also supplied 36 tons of high-tensile PT bars.

  • New Champlain Bridge

    New Champlain Bridge

The new Champlain Bridge is a 3km long bridge spanning over the Saint Lawrence River at the South-East entrance of Montreal, in the province of Quebec (Canada). The Champlain Bridge is one of the busiest bridges in Canada and plays an important economical role for its city as it is part of the main itinerary to the United States, accessible 60-km South.

Replacement of the older Champlain bridge

The New Champlain bridge will actually replace the existing Champlain bridge, commissioned in June 1962. The structure of the older bridge started showing signs of corrosion since 1994. After several temporary solutions to ensure safety of users and keep the bridge open, a new replacement project has been in the works since 2007. For some times the two bridges will be next to each other until the older structure is completely removed, with most of its structure planned to be recycled.

    A focus on corrosion resistance

As the New Champlain Bridge is designed to operate at least 125 years and handle 50 million car crossing per year. Because of the relatively corrosive environment caused by the frequent de-icing on the road, a strong focus was made on the corrosion resistance of the structure with duplex stainless steel rebar being installeed in critical areas.

For this project, Dextra suggested the use Duplex Stainless Steel Rolltec couplers and anchors. This sub-range of our popular Rolltec solution substitutes the main products of our Rolltec range, coupler and anchors, by and improved alternative duplex steel version.

The Rolltec solution is well fit for the Canadian market and approved by the Quebec Ministry of Transport. With a single operator threading equipment and 30sec cycles, it is highly productive, which is ideal for high-labor cost countries such as Canada.

More than 10,000 Stainless Rolltec couplers have been delivered for this project, used mostly in the span of the bridge. Couplers were used to splice the reinforcement on large bars, from bar diameter 35M (#11) to 55M (#18), which is actually the largest diameter in our Rolltec range.

In addition, about 10,000 Rolltec stainless steel end anchors have been delivered, for sizes up to 55M (#18). The Rolltec Headed Bars are using the same thread system as the coupler, simplifying production.
