Battersea Power Station Development: The Revitalization of a UK Landmark

Battersea Power Station Development:

The Revitalization of a UK Landmark

Battersea Power Station was a decommissioned coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The power station was one of the world’s largest brick buildings and one of the last major symbols of London’s industrial past.

After the building remained empty for almost 40 years, a redevelopment plan kicked off with the mission to build a new iconic London landmark.

The 3rd phase consists in the creation of the so-called ‘Electric Boulevard’, which will include a connection to the Northern Line Extension station, more than 1,300 residential units, a 160-room hotel, retail spaces, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Dextra has been supplying several rebar coupler solutions to the site.

More than 100,000 Griptec and Rolltec cast-in-situ couplers were applied in masonry cells to alleviate the problem of rebar congestion due to long lap length.

Moreover, precast concrete panels reinforced by rebars were used in the building, equipped with 30,000 Groutec couplers for onsite connection of continuation bars.

The panels were easily lifted into place at the construction site: coupler cavities were then filled with non-shrink grouting mortar through the injection holes.

Finally, 3,000 Unitec bolted couplers were installed on rebars for repair works. These couplers were used to replace the damaged reinforcements with new ones and to connect to the finished structure.

The mixed-use community is anticipated to be completed in 2020 and to become a new landmark for locals, tourists and residents.

Qatar Mega Reservoirs

Qatar Mega Reservoirs

Qatar’s General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) is currently building fresh water reservoirs to store the equivalent of 7 days of Qatar’s national consumption of fresh water at WHO (World Health Organization) standards. The primary reservoirs are located in five different sites in Doha area: Um Baraka, Um Salal, Rawdat Rashid, Abu Nakhla, and Al Thumama.

The first phase of the project involves the construction of 5 mega reservoir sites, and will support the expected water demand at horizon 2026. The second phase includes the construction of 16 additional reservoirs within the five existing mega sites. With a capacity of 3.5 million m3 each, the Reservoirs are among the largest of their kind in the world.

For this project, Dextra Middle East delivered more than 3 million Bartec couplers to the rebar fabricators and contractors involved on the different packages.

Project requirements regarding corrosion protection specify that the complete reinforcement, including couplers, should be epoxy coated. Dextra is therefore delivering all Bartec couplers with epoxy coating, giving them a distinctive green look.

Aberdeen Harbour Expansion

Aberdeen Harbour Expansion

Aberdeen Harbour is one of the oldest and busiest ports in the UK.

It serves as a hub for the marine operations of oil and gas industry in north-west Europe, offering links to 40 countries.

The expansion project of the new South Harbour aims to increase and diversify the existing capabilities. Combined with the current port, Aberdeen Harbour will soon become the largest port in Scotland in terms of berthage.

The Aberdeen Harbour expansion mainly involved dredging within Nigg Bay to construct two breakwaters and develop quayside on the north and west sides of the bay.

Dextra offered a convenient solution for concrete integrity testing of the 35-45m depth bored piles that support the harbour structure. Both 50 and 100mm tubes were used by the contractor: Dragados, with 100mm used for inclinometry and coring purpose.

After drilling a vertical hole into the soil, Sonitec sonic tubes were equipped with the reinforcement cages and lowered into the hole, the latter is then filled with concrete, and the sonic logging testing is subsequently performed.

Dextra Sonitec system is designed to facilitate the assembly and installation of long tube lengths in reinforcement cages with its enlarged bell-mouth that allows the seamless connection of the tubes. The system complies with ASTM D6760, the standard method for integrity testing by ultrasonic cross-hole testing.

This port expansion upscales opportunities for existing customers, and opens the door to new markets, future-proofing the harbour’s ability to support the economic prosperity of the city and region.
