Aberdeen Harbour Expansion

Aberdeen Harbour Expansion

Aberdeen Harbour is one of the oldest and busiest ports in the UK.

It serves as a hub for the marine operations of oil and gas industry in north-west Europe, offering links to 40 countries.

The expansion project of the new South Harbour aims to increase and diversify the existing capabilities. Combined with the current port, Aberdeen Harbour will soon become the largest port in Scotland in terms of berthage.

The Aberdeen Harbour expansion mainly involved dredging within Nigg Bay to construct two breakwaters and develop quayside on the north and west sides of the bay.

Dextra offered a convenient solution for concrete integrity testing of the 35-45m depth bored piles that support the harbour structure. Both 50 and 100mm tubes were used by the contractor: Dragados, with 100mm used for inclinometry and coring purpose.

After drilling a vertical hole into the soil, Sonitec sonic tubes were equipped with the reinforcement cages and lowered into the hole, the latter is then filled with concrete, and the sonic logging testing is subsequently performed.

Dextra Sonitec system is designed to facilitate the assembly and installation of long tube lengths in reinforcement cages with its enlarged bell-mouth that allows the seamless connection of the tubes. The system complies with ASTM D6760, the standard method for integrity testing by ultrasonic cross-hole testing.

This port expansion upscales opportunities for existing customers, and opens the door to new markets, future-proofing the harbour’s ability to support the economic prosperity of the city and region.

Reconstruction of Pak Kok Pier on Lamma Island

Reconstruction of Pak Kok Pier on Lamma Island

The Reconstruction of Pak Kok Pier on Lamma Island is a project to reconstruct the existing pier located at the northern tip of Lamma Island in Hong Kong, including provision of ancillary facilities such as roof cover, lighting system, benches, and solar panels, etc. and environmental monitoring and mitigation measures.

Due to the primitive design of the Pier and the occasional rough sea condition, the berthing condition of the Pier is unsatisfactory, causing inconvenience to passengers, especially for kids and the elderly, when boarding and alighting. The project aims to improve the berthing condition.

Dextra delivered more than 600 meters of GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) rebars in straight and bending shapes for the reinforcement of the ferry pier structure.

Dextra GFRP rebar is a corrosion-free alternative to steel rebar. The continuous exposure to seawater and contaminants made it the perfect solution to substitute traditional steel rebars.

Mahatma Gandhi Setu Rehabilitation

Mahatma Gandhi Setu Rehabilitation

The Mahatma Gandhi Setu (also known as Gandhi Setu or Ganga Setu) is a bridge that spans the Ganges River in Bihar, India, and connects Patna and Hajipur. It is India’s third-longest river bridge, with a length of 5,750 meters.

The bridge had experienced considerable traffic congestion in recent decades as a result of an increase in the number of cars crossing it, which had caused it to operate at capacity and overburden the structure. It required replacement of the concrete superstructure with steel framework.

Dextra participated in this renovation project by supplying RepairGrip couplers for the connection of old pier and new pier caps.

Fully threaded bars were also provided for various applications during the demolition of the old superstructure.

The renovated western flank was opened to public on July 31, 2020.
