Battersea Power Station Development: The Revitalization of a UK Landmark

    Battersea Power Station Development:

The Revitalization of a UK Landmark

Battersea Power Station was a decommissioned coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The power station was one of the world’s largest brick buildings and one of the last major symbols of London’s industrial past.

After the building remained empty for almost 40 years, a redevelopment plan kicked off with the mission to build a new iconic London landmark.

The 3rd phase consists in the creation of the so-called ‘Electric Boulevard’, which will include a connection to the Northern Line Extension station, more than 1,300 residential units, a 160-room hotel, retail spaces, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Dextra has been supplying several rebar coupler solutions to the site.

More than 100,000 Griptec and Rolltec cast-in-situ couplers were applied in masonry cells to alleviate the problem of rebar congestion due to long lap length.

Moreover, precast concrete panels reinforced by rebars were used in the building, equipped with 30,000 Groutec couplers for onsite connection of continuation bars.

The panels were easily lifted into place at the construction site: coupler cavities were then filled with non-shrink grouting mortar through the injection holes.

Finally, 3,000 Unitec bolted couplers were installed on rebars for repair works. These couplers were used to replace the damaged reinforcements with new ones and to connect to the finished structure.

The mixed-use community is anticipated to be completed in 2020 and to become a new landmark for locals, tourists and residents.

The building, located in Paris La Défense, will be the tallest high-rise in the country and a prime example of innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology in the world of architecture.

One of the key factors that sets this building apart from others is the use of Dextra’s Fortec coupler for the reinforcement of its structure. Fortec coupler is a highly advanced and innovative solution for reinforcing concrete structures, and it was used throughout the building to ensure maximum strength and stability.

The building is being constructed with a focus on sustainability and durability. The use of Fortec coupler was an important part of this effort, as it provides a reliable and long-lasting solution for reinforcing concrete structures. The coupler is made of high-strength steel, which makes it extremely durable and able to withstand the harsh weather conditions in the La Défense area.

Fortec coupler also offers a number of benefits over traditional reinforcement methods. For example, it is faster and easier to install than traditional reinforcement methods, which helps to reduce construction time and costs. It also helps to maintain the structure’s integrity even in the event of an earthquake or other natural disaster.

The Link La Défense building is set to be a marvel of modern engineering, and the use of Fortec coupler is a critical component in its design. The coupler’s durability, reliability, and sustainability will ensure that the building remains a prominent structure in the La Défense area for many years to come.

For this project, Dextra engineered and supplied in 2012 the Tension Bars suspending the roof of the building.

The long architectural bar systems are anchored onto concrete pylons and act as suspenders to hold the building roofing’s structrure.

For this project Tension Bars were supplied in Grade 700, the highest in our range. Highest grade allow a better performance/steel ratio and therefore make it possible to pick smaller diameter. This results in a thinner structure and overall better aesthetics. Moreover, diameter bars and lighter elements also ease handling and installation operations at site.

Each segment of bar is spliced to the next one by the use of coupler (no length adjustment) or turnbuckle (length adjustment and tensioning possible).

Connection to the concrete structure is performed thanks to fork ends set up onto steel gusset plates.

In total, those are more than 129 tons of Tension Bars which are anchoring the roof structure, with tendons exceeding 30 meters.
