The Cochin Shipyard – New Dry Dock Project is a major expansion designed to accommodate the construction of larger vessels and enhance India’s shipbuilding capabilities. Spearheaded by L&T (Larsen & Toubro) Construction, this world-class facility will meet the growing demands of the maritime industry, providing advanced solutions for ship maintenance, repairs, and construction.

The 310-meter-long dry dock boasts a width of 75/60 meters and a depth of 13 meters, equipped with a 600-ton gantry crane, making it one of the largest marine infrastructures in the region. The dock floor is designed to handle a load of 600 tons per meter, allowing it to support the construction of even larger aircraft carriers with a 70,000-ton displacement. The dry dock will serve both ship construction and repair needs, cementing its role as a crucial asset in India’s maritime sector.

Dextra is proud to support the construction of the New Pamban Bridge in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, India, by supplying critical structural components for the steel tower and lifting mechanism.

For this landmark project, Dextra provided:

  • 244 sets of fully-threaded (FT) bars (930/1080 grade, 32mm diameter, in lengths of 2,700mm and 3,400mm) along with swivel plates, nuts, end caps, and tube assembly for securing the steel tower/pylon.
  • 24 sets of tension rods (carbon steel M48, grade 700, in lengths of 3,450mm and 3,850mm) for the counterweight position, which are connected to steel wire ropes to lift the bridge vertically.

The New Pamban Bridge is India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, enhancing connectivity to Rameswaram Island. Dextra’s high-performance tensioning and post-tensioning solutions ensure durability, stability, and precise load handling, contributing to the bridge’s reliable and efficient operation.

Dextra plays a vital role in guaranteeing the structural integrity of the bridge by supplying Sonitec crosshole sonic logging (CSL) testing tubes for the testing of piles. CSL testing is a crucial procedure that provides real-time insights into the quality and soundness of the concrete in the piles, ensuring they meet stringent safety standards. This advanced technology enables engineers to detect anomalies and assess the quality of the concrete, ensuring the long-term durability of the bridge.

The Rail Baltica project represents the largest railway infrastructure development in the history of the Baltic States. These couplers have been utilized extensively in the connections for diaphragm wall (d-wall) caging and slabs, pile cages, piers, and pier caps. By ensuring high-strength rebar connections, Bartec couplers contribute to the overall durability and resilience of the metro structure, particularly important in a densely populated and busy urban environment like Chennai. Precision Testing with Sonitec CSL Testing Tubes To ensure the highest standards of concrete integrity, Dextra provided over 80,000 Sonitec crosshole sonic logging (CSL) testing tubes. These tubes facilitate rigorous testing of piles and d-walls, helping to identify potential flaws within the concrete structure. This meticulous testing process enables project engineers to detect and address any irregularities, safeguarding the integrity and longevity of the metro’s foundations. Supporting Complex Structures with CR Bar 1080 Post-Tensioning Bars For the support of double-decker piers and the pre-tensioning of U-girders, Dextra supplied 68 CR Bar 1080 post-tensioning bars. These high-strength, fully threaded bars are critical in handling the complex loads and stresses that the elevated sections of the metro will endure. Facilitating Tunnel Boring with GFRP Soft-Eyes In the tunneling phase, Dextra also provided 42 GFRP soft-eyes, specifically designed for tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations.
