Icon Siam, new heights on Bangkok’s riverside

Double tower project aims to give back its glamour
to the banks of the Chao Phraya

On the right bank of the Chao Phraya river, the Icon Siam complex, consisting of two towers and a shopping mall, is currently reaching for new heights.

The two towers are expected to reach 280m (SuperLux Tower) and 315m (Magnolia Tower) respectively. The Magnolia Tower will thus be slightly taller than the MahaNakhon Tower, Bangkok’s tallest building since 2015.

Dextra is supplying Thai-Obayashi (contractor of the shopping mall structure) and Italian-Thai (contractor of both towers) with its Bartec rebar splicing solution.

Dextra engineers performed operator trainings and do preventive maintenance directly on site to guarantee maximum output in thread production.

In total, more than 800,000 Bartec rebar couplers and 20,000 Bartec Headed Bars are being used in foundations and superstructure in the following applications:

L-shaped dowel bars (wall-slab connections)

This is a typical application used in foundation D-Walls to avoid protruding rebar. it is also used in the superstructure to allow the sliding formwork to climb up without any disturbance

Substitution of hooked bars with end anchors

When the wall reinforcement is especially congested, the use of Headed Bars (also called end anchors) allows to anchor the reinforcement in the wall without the need to produce hooks.

Double-ended connection in shear-walls

This solution allows to create a continuity inside the column or wall by bridging two horizontal slabs or beams.

Welded couplers for composite structures

Sometimes it is necessary to start reinforcement from the steel structure. In that case, weldable couplers are the ideal solution: Made of a low-carbon steel, they can be welded easily and allow connection to a threaded rebar.

Riyadh Metro progress

Dextra supplied multiple packages of this new urban transportation system

リヤド地下鉄 is a massive urban transit system project under construction in the capital of Saudi Arabia

The new transportation system will feature 85 stations, built along 6 lines, for a total rail length of 176km.

It is expected that the system will serve at least 1 million passengers daily at its inauguration in 2018.

For this large infrastructure project, Dextra has been involved in several stations and packages.

Anchoring station perimeter walls

Splicing rebar across station

1/ Ground Anchors

During the excavation phase and before proceeding with the general construction works, the retaining walls of the excavation area need to be anchored to the background. This will prevent any wall displacement and guarantee the safety of operations.

For that purpose, Dextra supplied steel ground anchors installed at the station perimeter. Each system is based on a high-tensile fully threaded bar, coming with nut and plate, and grouted to provide bonding with the soil.

2/ Unitec bolted couplers

バーテック, the leading coupler solution in the Middle East, was used for rebar connection in slabs, columns and wall connections.

Unitec bolted couplers have also been used on various parts of the project. Typically, Unitec is applied when the rebar cannot be threaded and lap lengths are too short for a correct splice.

In such cases Unitec provides a convenient and full performance connection, while only requiring a standard impact wrench to lock the connection

Heavy lifting of offshore viaduct elements

Dextra systems are used for the new Route du Littoral project, Reunion Island

On the French island of La Réunion (located 700 km East off the coast of Madagascar), a joint venture composed of contractors VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Bouygues Travaux Publics, Dodin Campenon Bernard and Demathieu Bard, is currently building a new offshore elevated 2×2-lanes viaduct of 13 kilometers, which aims to replace the older unsafe road structure, located along the coast and frequently damaged by rockfall.

For this large project, VINCI is operating a large custom-made platform named “Zourite” to position, lift and sink heavy precast bridge piles – an engineering challenge considering the individual weight of the elements: up to 4,800 tons for the base of piles!

The JV members and Dextra worked together to design a lifting system based on M64 smooth bar systems in high performance grade 930/1080, with each system withstanding loads up to 200 tons.

each anchored to concrete thanks to 8 Dextra bar systems.

A total of 32 bar systems are anchored directly into the concrete base of each pile and post-tensioned using a hydraulic rotary jack before lifting.

Once the base reaches its final location, the top part of the anchorage is dismantled by divers so it can be reused for the installation of other piles.

The first piles have been installed at the end of August. A total a 48 piles will support the Route du Littoral viaduct, all lifted thanks to more than 1,500+ Dextra bars.

Bangkok’s MahaNakhon

inaugurated in a storm of light

Bangkok’s MahaNakhon tower, the highest residential tower of Asia and the highest tower in Thailand (314 meters), was inaugurated at the end of August with a spectacular light show!

Bangkokians were able to witness the light emanating from the pixelated areas of the facade several consecutive nights.

For the construction of the tower, Dextra supplied contractor Bouygues-Thai with Bartec rebar coupler solutions and rebar preparation services. Couplers were used for the connection of the core wall to the mega columns. Bartec End anchors were also provided for the 5.0 to 9.0 meters thick mat foundation.

In addition to couplers, Dextra Architectural Tension Bar systems have also been installed in the rooftop skybar.

Grand Paris Express:

Composite Active Anchors installed

ASTEC Active Anchors have been installed by Franki Foundations & Atlas Foundations for stabilizing excavation works of the Bagneux station (Metro M4 extension and future M15), in the North of Paris. The solution has been approved for this project by engineering consulting firm SYSTRA.

ASTEC Active Anchors are the preferred solution for subway stations works as Tunnel Boring Machines and earth-moving equipment can simply cut the anchors’ FRP tendons at any stage, eliminating any need of unreliable and costly removal of anchors.

After numerous successful projects in the Middle East, this was the first time ASTEC Active Anchors were installed in Europe.

Multitower residential complex

built at precast speed

Dream Acres is a large residential complex (330,000 sq. m. area) located east of Bangalore in India.

The ambitious real estate program features 13 towers of 14 floors built in a record time thanks to the use of precast elements produced in a state-of-the-art purpose-built factory next to the construction site.

Groutec couplers are employed for the swift connection of precast elements either to a footing or directly to another precast element. Groutec couplers advantageously splice load-bearing elements together, ensuring a high performance connection and speeding up installation compared to more traditional wet in-situ joint methods.

The Bartec coupler system is used across Dream Acres for cast-in-situ applications as well as inside the precast elements. Dextra India also provides all rebar preparation services.

Congratulations to developer Sobha Ltd. for already completing the first towers ahead of schedule.

The Dextra teams are looking forward to more successful precast and in-situ connections on the next phases of the project!

Bridge across Kuwait Bay

Clever solutions for piling works on the Doha Link project

Piling and equipmentsDoha Link is a 12.4km project connecting Kuwait City (from Shuwaikh Port) to Doha Area. It will ultimately solve traffic congestion and offer a direct itinerary between the two areas thanks to a 7.7km bridge built on shallow waters across the Kuwait Bay.

Two different Dextra solutions are currently used for the piling works on the Doha Link project:

>> Rolltec® couplers for large diameter rebars (32, 36 and 40mm) are used onshore and offshore for the connection of cages and piers. Two grades of rebar are used across the project: ASTM Grade 60 and Grade 80. Rolltec being compatible by design with the higher ASTM Grade 80, same couplers may be used on all applications, simplifying stock keeping. In addition, smaller diameters couplers for rebars 12mm and 16mm are being used in the superstructure and the footing of light poles. There are currently 4 actively running Rolltec threading equipment on site. Dextra team provides continuous support to the contractor GS Engineering & Construction to maintain rebar production at the productivity level and quality standards required.

>> Sonitec®. With large piles of 2.5m diameter and 60m depth in average, it was compulsory for GS E&C to conduct sonic logging tests to examine the integrity of concrete piles, requiring to install 8 tubes in each cage. Dextra Sonitec was the preferred choice of the contractor thanks to its light weight and unique Push-Fit® connection feature. Sonitec provides enough flexibility during the cage construction, lifting and assembly to remove needs for additional time-consuming welding operations.

Doha Link, which delivery is expected on time end of 2018, will also be linked through an interchange to Jaber Causeway, another bridge project located north of Kuwait City, on which Dextra is also supplying its solutions.

Composite Active Anchors for Doha Metro

CFRP anchors and Soft-Eye combined for an easy TBM breakthrough

For underground works, e.g. metro stations, ASTEC Active Anchors can be used in combination with D-Wall Soft-Eyes to temporarily anchor the retaining wall during excavation works. At TBM breakthrough, the CFRP (Carbon-fiber–reinforced polymer) anchor tendons will be cut together with the Soft-Eye, saving an important amount of time and work.

For the Mshereib Station, 150 multi-tendons Active Anchors combined with 8 ASTEC Soft-Eyes have been supplied to the SOQ Joint Venture (composed of Samsung C&T, Obrascon Huarte Lain & Qatar Building Company), and under the supervision of consulting firm Mott MacDonald.

Next generation of threading equipment ready for roll-out

Dextra’s new model of thread-rolling equipment for rebar end preparation is now available.

From the rebar introduction, all operations are now automated until thread completion. The operator can just step back and monitor the work being done!

Threading times have been reduced drastically to reach a mere 20sec per bar end on average.

Furthermore, on-board computer now allows to retrieve a wealth of data, including machine status monitoring and production statistics.

Higher grades that ease the job

BESIX chose Dextra Marine Tie Rods Gr. 700 for Douala’s Quay 51 extension

Belgian contractor BESIX recently installed Dextra marine tie rods and accessories on Pier 51 (a 165 meter quay wall) of Douala Port in Cameroon. The diameter of the bars could be reduced on this project thanks to the use of Grade 700 steel rods, allowing a higher performance-per-ton ratio, making onsite handling and installation significantly easier.

Tension bars for flying tents

The Dextra tension bar range for architectural applications is designed with flexibility in mind so designers can fully express their creativity. No other range on the market offers such a large selection of diameters, accessories and finishes. It’s all about finding the right combination to match your design.

Higher steel grades will also allow to keep your bar structure as thin and discreet as possible.

This is the solution chosen at Sabah Al-Salem Kuwait University City, where more than 1,000 tension bar sets are supporting the floating tent-shaped structures that provide shades to all parking areas.

World’s highest tower on the way (up)!

The tower which will soon become the highest building in the world is currently being built in Saudi Arabia.

Jeddah Tower (previously called Kingdom Tower) is expected to break the one-kilometer mark, making it 180 meters higher than the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai,

The tower structure has been engineered by consulting firm Thornton Tomasetti and is built by contractor Saudi Bin Laden, to which Dextra is delivering through the support of its partner Bahra Steel.

Jeddah Tower will ultimately host a 200-rooms Four Seasons hotel, service apartments, several floors of offices and an observatory. A total of 59 elevators will allow visitors to move between floors.

To support this engineering prowess, Dextra is proudly delivering Bartec Couplers for both foundations and superstructure packages. Two main types of Bartec couplers are used: Standard and Bridging, used for cage connections.

Architectural Bars: Extra-long tension bar systems at BITEC

The new expansion of Bangkok’s exhibition center uses assemblies over 50 meters long

Dextra supplied contractor Italian-Thai with tension bars to support the roof structure of the expansion of BITEC, a leading exhibition and convention center in central Bangkok. Installation has already started and will finish this year.

Dextra delivered 298 assemblies in various diameters, each composed of multiple bars connected with couplers and turnbuckles and anchored to the structure with fork ends, with total assembly lengths in several cases exceeding 50 meters long (average 33 meters).

For such large structures, tension bars offer a number of advantages compared to other “tensioning” solutions: lower elongation under loads, lower post tensioning forces required, better resistance to corrosion, reduced long terms relaxation and reduced maintenance and surveillance costs.

Couplers and headed bars in oil & gas precast pipe

racksRebar couplers are fastest and most reliable way to assemble precast pipe racks

After Reliance Jamnagar Refinery in India, the largest in the world, Dextra has now started supplying another massive petrochemical complex, Petronas’ RAPID (Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development Project) in Malaysia. Those two projects highlight the benefits of using rebar couplers and end anchors to quickly raise pipe rack structures.

First, in foundations and long precast elements, standard rebar couplers can be used to connect the reinforcement.

To connect precast elements together without need of in situ joints, the best solution is to take advantage of Groutec, a hybrid coupler solution featuring a threaded end to connect reinforcement and a large cavity for grouting.

Groutec couplers are commonly used for vertical applications: at the footing of column, or in the structure for the vertical connection of beams and columns.

Alternatively, Groutec can also be used horizontally together with headed bars to connect a beam to a column. Please contact us for more information.

Dextra has developed the ultimate alternative to removable ground anchors

Hint: it doesn’t need to be removed

Temporary ground anchors are used in numerous applications including slope stabilization and excavations. Contractors usually install steel ground anchors, and then remove them once they become obsolete: a double burden.

Dextra has developed a range of innovative post-tensioned anchors: ASTEC Active Anchor (AAA)

  • Cuttable tendons made of GFRP material, corrosion resistant and possessing with tension performance to steel. More importantly in this case, it has the advantage of being easily crushed by tunnel or piles boring machines. Therefore, it doesn’t need to be removed from the ground.
  • Conventional steel PT strands compatible with any standard tensioning device (hydraulic jack), connected to GFRP tendons thanks to a proprietary connector. Assembly, installation & tensioning remains the same as for steel ground anchors.

Since mid-2014, Dextra delivered thousands of ASTEC Active Anchors in the Middle-East, both using CFRP & GFRP material. Many of them have been used in projects related to Doha Metro in Qatar, combining up to 10 tendons for an ultimate capacity of 250 tons. The FRP anchors have been selected as they allow the tunnel boring machine to cut through without generating any issue of encroachment on neighboring plots.

The last step of the expansion plan will take place during the second half of 2014 and will lead to a larger area for the splice manufacturing to support Dextra business expansion.

First soft-eyes delivered in South America

Dextra GFRP soft-eyes used in Rio Metro Linea 4

Rio de Janeiro is creating a new line for its subway, getting its city infrastructures ready for two major upcoming sport events, the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

At the Antero de Quental Station, Dextra supported the design of diaphragm walls and delivered to the Linha 4 Sul Consortium, headed by Odebrecht Infrastructure Brazil, 4 soft-eyes of 12m diameter made of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP), as well as Rolltec couplers used in the Diaphragm Wall connections.

ASTEC soft-eye facilitates the penetration of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) through diaphragm walls and secant piles thanks to the use of GFRP as an advantageous replacement for conventional steel rebars.

Dextra is a precursor in soft-eye technologies, having successfully delivered more than 400 soft-eyes worldwide since 1996. Other references in soft-eyes for subways include Dubai Metro, Dehli metro, Hong Kong MRT, Shanghai MRT, Portland MRT or London channel tunnel rail-link.
