An iconic project to connect the Philippines

Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) is one of the biggest infrastructure projects being undertaken in the Philippines. The project features a combination of a causeway, an 8.5km long cable-stayed toll bridge that will cross the navigable zone of the Cebu Strait, two viaducts and four low height bridges, as well as roadways and pedestrian walkways.

For the reinforcement of the colossal expressway foundations, the contractor CLJV has chosen Dextra’s well-known rebar splicing solution Bartec.

Standard, Bridging, as well as Transition splices in diameters 40 and 50mm have been used with grade 75 bars in the foundations’ piling cages.

Moreover, CLJV opted for Dextra Bartec headed bars to provide better end anchorages in congested areas, a convenient alternative to hooked bars, traditionally used for anchoring.

Bridge the Panama Canal with Dextra solutions

Also called the Third Bridge Over the Panama Canal, the 2.8-kilometer Atlantic Bridge is one of the world’s longest cable-stayed concrete bridge.

Crossing one of the world’s most crucial shipping routes, the Atlantic Bridge is located near the city of Colón. It is designed not only to let vehicles cross the canal even when the locks are in operation, but also to allow the passage of large container ships, Post-Panamax, with its 75-meter vertical clearance above sea level.

For this iconic project, more than 350,000 Dextra standard Bartec couplers were used for the bridge’s reinforced pile cages, pile caps and pylons by the contractor VINCI Grand Projets. The full-performance Bartec couplers substitute the overlap on rebars of up to #14 (equivalent 43 mm) on grade 80 steel.

Dextra also provided 3 sets of Bartec equipment for on-site bar-end preparation. Machine setup, operator training and maintenance services were done by our local After Sales Service team to guarantee maximum productivity. Moreover, to avoid steel congestion in the bridge’s pile caps, more than 50,000 Headed Bars end anchors were also used.

The Atlantic Bridge is planned to open in early 2019.

Kuwait’s largest infrastructure project

to be enhanced with Dextra solutions

Aspiring to become a regional hub, Kuwait airport increases its capacity

The Kuwait Airport Expansion project aims to meet the country’s rapid and significant economic growth and satisfy the steadily-rising passenger and cargo flow.

The new Terminal II is designed not only to provide highest comfort to passengers, but also to reflect Kuwait’s rich culture and civilization. When completed, the building will have the form of a symmetrical triangular mark. Passenger capacity of the airport will increase to 25 million in the first phase of the expansion, which would be more than double of what it is currently handling.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works has elaborated very stringent specifications for this landmark project, which requires UK CARES and US ASME certifications from the manufacturer. Rolltec® couplers were therefore a natural choice for the contractor Limak Insaat, as they meet all the client’s requirements in terms of performance and quality, and the client could count on a strong local presence and support from Dextra.

Standard Rolltec® couplers are extensively used for the raft, walls and columns connections of the entire terminal. Furthermore, weldable couplers were delivered for the connection of the ninety precast mega-columns with the steel roof structure.

To support the supply of over 1 million connections, Dextra has deployed fifteen Rolltec® threading machines to site. The project completion date is set in 2020.

The new International Airport for Mexico City is building on Dextra solutions

Mexico City’s new International Airport was designed by Sir Norman Foster and launched in 2014. It is located to the East of Mexico’s capital and aims to provide the city with a new state-of-the-art air transportation hub. The project consists of an X-shaped terminal with a targeted annual capacity of 68 million passengers, 3 runways, and the control tower.

For this the largest infrastructure project in Latin America, Dextra is supplying Coupleurs de barres d'armature Bartec. These are used in the foundations of the terminal building (contractor ICA), the transport building (contractor Sacyr) and the control tower (contractor Aldesa).

Bartec couplers, often preferred in seismic areas such as Mexico, substitute the overlap on all size ASTM #12 (equivalent 38 mm) rebar. On such large diameters, it is both faster and cheaper to connect bars with couplers rather than traditional overlap splicing.

Dextra is currently providing Mexico Airport with 10 sets of Bartec equipment (a total of 30 machines, with each set delivered in a container). This setup is being supported by our local after-sales team which is training the machine operators and maintaining the equipment to achieve maximum productivity.

Ready-to-install ground anchors make for faster excavations

Anchors installed at Duba Green Power Plant were pre-grouted at the Dextra factory

For Duba Green Power Plant, Dextra supplied its Geotec Double Corrosion Protection (DCP) Permanent Steel ground anchors to prevent soil movement in the perimeter of the excavation.

Dextra provided a “factory grouting” service, meaning that the anchors arrived at the site as pre-grouted 12-meters segments, ready to re-connect via couplers and to install.

Fully-threaded bars anchoring systems

“No-need-for-removal” anchors

Nagpur Metro Zero Mile Station in India advantageously substitutes

removable anchors for ASTEC (FRP) Active Anchors.

Typical “removable anchors” are steel tendons which are stabilizing soil as a temporary application. At the end of a project “removable anchors” require a lot of force in order to be removed. Applying excessive force can be hazardous because it may lead to an anchor failure, which is both dangerous for site personnel and will lead to even greater and potentially more dangerous extraction problems.

Now imagine anchors being made of a material which can be left in the ground without being an issue for future construction or land users, even if some segments extend beyond the site boundary: that is precisely what Dextra is offering with its ASTEC Active Anchor.

The ASTEC Active Anchor offers the same convenience as a conventional anchor (couplers for extended length, PT strands for stressing), but uses FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bar as the main tensile element, a material which can be cut and removed at a later stage by standard ground excavation equipment.

This means it can simply remain in the ground, without being an issue to future contractors or land users. This significantly reduces project planning and budget.

High performance FRP anchoring systems

Nagpur Metro in India is the latest project to take advantage of the ASTEC (FRP) Active Anchor technology, with 64 anchors being installed around the excavation perimeter.

Cantilever precast elements installed in Abu Dhabi

Groutec couplers are supplied for the tribunes of a police training facility

Louvre Abu Dhabi opening

Dextra supplied Bartec rebar couplers to the project between 2013 and 2014

Louvre Abu Dhabi is a new innovative art and civilization museum located North of Abu Dhabi city, capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is the largest museum on the Arabian peninsula, with a total surface of 24,000 square meters. The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi opened its doors on the 11th of November 2017.

For this project, Dextra supplied Bartec rebar coupler between 2013 and 2014. These were used by the main contractor Arabtec for all rebar connections in the raft and columns. Couplers were also used as a way to create temporary openings in the reinforcement structure to allow passage of men and equipment. A total of 110,000 connections were supplied for this project.

Dextra Bartec is approved by the Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) and sold widely in the UAE through an extensive network of Dextra partner distributors.

Pedestrian bridge suspension with tension bars

An aesthetic and easy-to-install way to anchor small bridges

Tension Bars do not have to always span long distances, such as the ones seen on stadium roofs. Tension bars of shorter lengths and smaller diameters can also be used in numerous other applications, such as facade trusses, stiffenings, cross-bracing applications and pedestrian bridge supports.

The application above illustrates an example of tension bars holding a pedestrian bridge which allows the passage of customers between two large commercial malls in Bangkok. The structure is supported on both sides by Grade 500 bars of diameter 45 mm (thread size M48). The use of fork ends and pin connections allow for a fast installation and in-situ length adjustment.

Forest City builds on Dextra precast solutions

The new city is rising on the Southern tip of Malaysia across from Singapore

Forest City is a massive mixed-use urban development located close to Johor Bahru in Southern Malaysia. The development is built on reclaimed land on the shores of the Johor Strait.

Dextra has been involved since the early phases of the project as suppliers of the Groutec S precast connection solution.

Groutec S is the recently introduced slim version of the well-known Groutec L coupler. Its compact design allows it to fit into thin precast elements.

The sleeves simplify the connection of precast elements (e.g. columns or panels) to the structure of the 38-storey towers, thus speeding up the construction cycle.

Both Groutec models consume significantly less grout than other grouting sleeves on the market and do not require proprietary grout.

Viaduct construction in seismic environment

The Bol-Boljare project aims at boosting Montenegro’s economy

The Bar-Boljare Highway is a key infrastructure project led by the Ministry of Transportation and Maritime Affairs of Montenegro and built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The 2×2 lanes highway spans over 40km, in seismic environment.

iNGEROP, the consulting firm on the project, required the rebar couplers to comply with ISO 15835 requirements (cyclic requirements as per class S2). For that reason, CRBC chose Dextra Bartec® solution for reinforcement connection.

Soft-Eyes installed at Singapore Marine Terrace Station

A future part of the Thomson-East Coast Line

Four large diameter soft eyes have been installed in the diaphragm wall cages of the new Singapore MRT Marine Terrace Station during August 2017.

The D-Walls installed on Terrace Station also feature Bartec® rebar couplers, a common application which allows for the horizontal re-connection of the station slabs.

Icon Siam, new heights on Bangkok’s riverside

Double tower project aims to give back its glamour
to the banks of the Chao Phraya

On the right bank of the Chao Phraya river, the Icon Siam complex, consisting of two towers and a shopping mall, is currently reaching for new heights.

Dextra is supplying Thai-Obayashi (contractor of the shopping mall structure) and Italian-Thai (contractor of both towers) with its Bartec rebar splicing solution.

Les ingénieurs de Dextra ont dispensé des formations aux opérateurs et effectué une maintenance préventive directement sur site pour garantir un rendement maximal dans la production de filetage.

In total, more than 800,000 Bartec rebar couplers and 20,000 Bartec Headed Bars are being used in foundations and superstructure in the following applications:

L-shaped dowel bars (wall-slab connections)

This is a typical application used in foundation D-Walls to avoid protruding rebar. it is also used in the superstructure to allow the sliding formwork to climb up without any disturbance

Métro de Riyad is a massive urban transit system project under construction in the capital of Saudi Arabia

The new transportation system will feature 85 stations, built along 6 lines, for a total rail length of 176km.

It is expected that the system will serve at least 1 million passengers daily at its inauguration in 2018.

For this large infrastructure project, Dextra has been involved in several stations and packages.

Anchoring station perimeter walls

Splicing rebar across station

1/ Ground Anchors

During the excavation phase and before proceeding with the general construction works, the retaining walls of the excavation area need to be anchored to the background. This will prevent any wall displacement and guarantee the safety of operations.

For that purpose, Dextra supplied steel ground anchors installed at the station perimeter. Each system is based on a high-tensile fully threaded bar, coming with nut and plate, and grouted to provide bonding with the soil.

2/ Unitec bolted couplers

Bartec, the leading coupler solution in the Middle East, was used for rebar connection in slabs, columns and wall connections.

Unitec bolted couplers have also been used on various parts of the project. Typically, Unitec is applied when the rebar cannot be threaded and lap lengths are too short for a correct splice.

In such cases Unitec provides a convenient and full performance connection, while only requiring a standard impact wrench to lock the connection

Heavy lifting of offshore viaduct elements

Dextra systems are used for the new Route du Littoral project, Reunion Island

On the French island of La Réunion (located 700 km East off the coast of Madagascar), a joint venture composed of contractors VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Bouygues Travaux Publics, Dodin Campenon Bernard and Demathieu Bard, is currently building a new offshore elevated 2×2-lanes viaduct of 13 kilometers, which aims to replace the older unsafe road structure, located along the coast and frequently damaged by rockfall.

For this large project, VINCI is operating a large custom-made platform named “Zourite” to position, lift and sink heavy precast bridge piles – an engineering challenge considering the individual weight of the elements: up to 4,800 tons for the base of piles!

The JV members and Dextra worked together to design a lifting system based on M64 smooth bar systems in high performance grade 930/1080, with each system withstanding loads up to 200 tons.

each anchored to concrete thanks to 8 Dextra bar systems.

A total of 32 bar systems are anchored directly into the concrete base of each pile and post-tensioned using a hydraulic rotary jack before lifting.

Once the base reaches its final location, the top part of the anchorage is dismantled by divers so it can be reused for the installation of other piles.

The first piles have been installed at the end of August. A total a 48 piles will support the Route du Littoral viaduct, all lifted thanks to more than 1,500+ Dextra bars.

Bangkok’s MahaNakhon

inaugurated in a storm of light

Bangkok’s MahaNakhon tower, the highest residential tower of Asia and the highest tower in Thailand (314 meters), was inaugurated at the end of August with a spectacular light show!

Bangkokians were able to witness the light emanating from the pixelated areas of the facade several consecutive nights.

For the construction of the tower, Dextra supplied contractor Bouygues-Thai with Bartec rebar coupler solutions and rebar preparation services. Couplers were used for the connection of the core wall to the mega columns. Bartec End anchors were also provided for the 5.0 to 9.0 meters thick mat foundation.

In addition to couplers, Dextra Architectural Tension Bar systems have also been installed in the rooftop skybar.

Composite Active Anchors installed

ASTEC Active Anchors have been installed by Franki Foundations & Atlas Foundations for stabilizing excavation works of the Bagneux station (Metro M4 extension and future M15), in the North of Paris. The solution has been approved for this project by engineering consulting firm SYSTRA.

ASTEC Active Anchors are the preferred solution for subway stations works as Tunnel Boring Machines and earth-moving equipment can simply cut the anchors’ FRP tendons at any stage, eliminating any need of unreliable and costly removal of anchors.

After numerous successful projects in the Middle East, this was the first time ASTEC Active Anchors were installed in Europe.

Multitower residential complex

built at precast speed

Dream Acres is a large residential complex (330,000 sq. m. area) located east of Bangalore in India.

The ambitious real estate program features 13 towers of 14 floors built in a record time thanks to the use of precast elements produced in a state-of-the-art purpose-built factory next to the construction site.

Groutec couplers are employed for the swift connection of precast elements either to a footing or directly to another precast element. Groutec couplers advantageously splice load-bearing elements together, ensuring a high performance connection and speeding up installation compared to more traditional wet in-situ joint methods.

The Bartec coupler system is used across Dream Acres for cast-in-situ applications as well as inside the precast elements. Dextra India also provides all rebar preparation services.

Congratulations to developer Sobha Ltd. for already completing the first towers ahead of schedule.

The Dextra teams are looking forward to more successful precast and in-situ connections on the next phases of the project!
