Melbourne’s metropolitan rail service operates 226 six-carriage trains across 998 km of tracks. The metro has 15 lines and 222 stations, serving more than 400,000 passengers a day across the city.

In 2017, the construction of a 9 km-long tunnel and five new underground stations was announced to increase capacity and expand coverage in the city’s suburban area.

Construction began in 2018. Dextra was involved in the project by supplying rebar connectors with fully automated rebar preparation equipment for the station’s structural reinforcement works.

Griptec couplers were chosen for their unrivaled performance in tension, compression, and fatigue, with 400,000 units delivered.

In addition, Dextra supplied:

  • 5,300 GFRP Astec Combination Bolts — These were used at the CBD cavern location. The 19m width of the cavern allowed for the construction of two conventional 7m tunnels, built in parallel with the middle segments secured by GFRP CB Bolts, which can be cut to widen the gallery.
  • 2,400 GFRP Geotec GR45 – 25mm dowels — Each measuring 11.8 meters, these dowels were used to secure the excavation face.
  • 900 GFRP Astec Soil Nails ST50 – 41 — These were applied to secure several stations under construction. Some of them extend beyond the project boundary since GFRP can remain in the ground and be easily cut later.
  • 16 Soft-Eyes — Installed in the D-Wall and bored pile of five stations.

Dextra provided support and shared its expertise on GFRP during the design stage, producing custom-shaped GFRP solutions to meet the owner’s expectations. Due to the cuttability of GFRP, the TBM can pass through the D-Wall in minimal time without causing damage.

The metro tunnel and its new stations are due to open in 2025 and are predicted to become a new landmark for the city.

The Hatta Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant project is located near the community of Hatta in the Hajar Mountains, 140 km southeast of Dubai.

The plant will use water stored in an upper reservoir at the Hatta Dam, utilizing pumped storage technology with solar-powered pumps from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

The project was awarded to a consortium that includes STRABAG Dubai LLC, STRABAG AG, Austria’s Andritz Hydro, and Ozkar, an Oman-based construction company. France’s EDF is acting as a consultant for the project.

It will comprise a turbine shaft with a diameter of approximately 36 meters and a depth of nearly 70 meters, designed to accommodate two turbines with a total expected power output of 250 MW. Additionally, a 1.2 km-long pressure tunnel and two road tunnels, approximately 470 meters and 440 meters in length, will be excavated.

Hyosung LPG Cavern: A Large-Scale Petrochemical Storage Project

This multi-phase project, developed by Hyosung Group, includes the construction of:

  • A propane dehydrogenation (PDH) production plant
  • A polypropylene (PP) plant
  • A liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage tank
  • Warehouses for LPG and petrochemical products

The entire complex will span 60 hectares within the Cai Mep Industrial Zone in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Dextra is supporting the construction of the 240,000-ton LPG underground storage facility by supplying 30,000 units of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rock bolts. These bolts are used to consolidate the cavern rock face around the 150-meter-deep excavation area.

To effectively prevent oil leakage, seawater will be injected into the surrounding rock, creating a water curtain. Given the highly corrosive environment, GFRP rock bolts are the ideal solution due to their corrosion resistance.

Advantages of Dextra GFRP Rock Bolts:

  • Cuttable mining anchors based on fully threaded GFRP tendons
  • Available in seven diameters (ranging from 20 mm to 40 mm)
  • Delivered with GFRP plates and nuts
  • Lightweight, making them easy to handle, transport, and install inside the tunnel
